Gordon sees specialist after being placed on IL

OAKLAND -- Mariners’ second baseman Dee Gordon saw a specialist in Orlando, Fla., about his ailing right wrist Friday, getting a second opinion after going on the injured list Tuesday.

Gordon tried to play through the injury after being hit on the wrist on May 9, but went on the injured list after a 3-for-22 stretch showed he wasn’t quite right.

Manager Scott Servais said he hadn’t heard if there were any new results, but the Mariners’ hope is that Gordon won’t miss too much time. Gordon, checking in at .281/.310/.369 even after the injury-plagued five-game skid, is eligible to come off the injured list on May 31.

Servais said the Gordon injury didn’t play into the club’s decision to send down infielder Dylan Moore (.212/.317/.385) -- after he received 60 plate appearances in 29 games -- in order to get Kyle Seager off the IL and onto the roster.

“This was about Dylan; when he broke with us it was really important with his development that he continued to play,” Servais said Saturday morning. “We didn’t want to look up at the end of the season and him having 175 at-bats or so at this level. We like both Shed [Long] and Dylan; they’ve done some good things here.

“We just thought we’d give Dylan a chance to play [at Triple-A], get him going and move him around the field like we’ve done here. And we will let Shed play here a little bit and see where that takes us. We’re trying to do what’s best for the development of both of these players.”

As for Seager, who was batting sixth in his return, Servais said, “We just have to get him some at-bats and get him going. As long as he is in the top nine, that’s a good spot for him. Well just continue to play around with it.”

Felix Hernandez, who landed on the IL May 12 with right shoulder stiffness, has begun throwing. Hernandez played catch Friday, throwing up to 60 feet, Servais said. There is no timetable for his return as yet.
