GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Del Matthews is leaving the White Sox for Major League Baseball's central office. He was formally named senior director of baseball development on Monday.
Matthews, the son of Gary Matthews and younger brother of Gary Matthews Jr., had been in the White Sox organization for a decade, most recently as assistant director of player development and scouting. He's also a former player.
In his new capacity, Matthews, 38, will oversee day-to-day operations of all the MLB Urban Youth Academies, as well as the coordination of the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.
"It's an extraordinary opportunity," said Matthews, who is running the White Sox Minor League camp and will continue to do so until he makes a full transition. "I'm extremely grateful and excited to be going back, doing the kind of work I'm doing, impacting the next generation of baseball players.
"That's very rewarding. Hopefully with my experience, I can talk to some of those guys about where they want to go and how they want to get there."
Matthews will report directly to senior vice president of youth programs Tony Reagins.
"We are very pleased to bring Del on board, as we believe his previous experiences at MLB, with the White Sox and as a Minor League player will bring invaluable insight to the future success of our programs," Reagins said. "He will strongly complement our efforts to provide young people with impactful high-caliber opportunities in our game."
Matthews was the director of baseball ops for the Arizona Fall League and is a product of MLB's executive development program. He was a third baseman and right fielder in the Minor League system of the Milwaukee Brewers from 2000-01.
