DeShields family shares father-son moment

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- There aren’t many memorable moments in Spring Training but the DeShields family experienced one on Wednesday afternoon when the Rangers hosted the Reds at Surprise Stadium.

Outfielder took the lineup card out for the Rangers and Delino DeShields did so, too, as the Reds' first-base coach. They are not Senior and Junior (different middle names) but they are father and son, and this was the first time they have been on the same Major League field together.

“It was a cool experience,” the younger DeShields said. “It was the first time we were both on a big league field together. Definitely an experience I won’t ever forget. Pretty cool for the both of us.”

Papa DeShields was a Major League second baseman from 1990-2002 and has been working in the Reds' farm system for the past 10 years. He was promoted to the Major League staff by new manager David Bell this year, and that gave him the opportunity to be on the same field as his son.

“It feels pretty good,” DeShields the Elder said. “I’m proud of him. Hopefully we can do this a few more times.”

The Rangers and the Reds played last Saturday in Goodyear and Rangers manager Chris Woodward gave his outfielder the day off, not realizing the potential father-son meeting.

“I felt bad the last time we played them because I had most of the starters off that day,” Woodward said. “He told me as I was leaving to go to the game, ‘Say hi to my dad for me.’ I said, ‘My bad.’”

Woodward arranged for Wednesday’s meeting at home plate, wanting to give the DeShields family something special to remember. The first base coach checked with Bell to make sure it was OK.

Bell naturally gave his blessing, coming from a famous baseball family that includes his grandfather Gus, an All-Star outfielder, father Buddy, a former Gold Glove third baseman, and brother Mike, who was once drafted by the Rangers.

“It’s just hard to imagine what that must feel like,” Bell said. “I’ve been on the other side of it a lot. That was fun to see.”

There will be another reunion June 14-16 when the Reds host the Rangers on Father’s Day weekend. That meeting may be a little more serious.

“That’s when the games matter,” the Rangers' DeShields said. “This was fun. Definitely a cool experience.”
