SAN DIEGO -- During the American League's 4-2 win on Tuesday evening at Petco Park in the 2016 All-Star Game presented by MasterCard, Yankees relievers Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller did what they usually do, sort of: pitch the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
Betances pitched a solid seventh, striking out two and allowing a Daniel Murphy base hit. But Miller got into trouble in the eighth, loading the bases on a pair of base hits and a walk.

And Carlos Beltran played a couple of innings in right field, replacing starter Mookie Betts, and he flied out to center during the sixth inning. It was his only at-bat, coming against Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer. Beltran was later replaced by Michael Saunders.
"It's a tough job for the manager to give everyone an at-bat," said the 39-year-old Beltran, playing in his ninth All-Star Game. "I'm just glad I had one. I played a couple of innings in the outfield. My wife was here, my kids. They got a chance to see their dad play a little bit. I got an at-bat against one of the nastiest pitchers in the game. I felt like I was fighting for my life. To get through that was a good feeling."

Back to Miller. In a rare occurrence, manager Ned Yost lifted the left-hander with the bases jammed in favor of righty Will Harris. Harris faced righty-swinging pinch-hitter Aledmys Diaz, who struck out looking on a full-count pitch, ending the NL's final threat.
It was Miller's first appearance in an All-Star Game in his 11 big league seasons.
"I'd like to pitch better," Miller said. "Still, it was nice to experience it and glad Will came in and did the job in a big situation. That's pretty cool. The goal now is focus on the second half and get ready to pitch again in a couple of days."

Betances has made the last three All-Star Games and has now struck out three in his two innings of work. He topped 100 mph several times on Tuesday, reaching 101 on his final pitch to strike out Nolan Arenado swinging, according to Statcast™.

Betances has made a mockery of opposing hitters, striking out an amazing 356 batters in 225 2/3 innings, including 78 in 44 innings thus far this season.
"I've pitched a lot. I feel good to this point," Betances said. "We had a lot of fun here. This has been a great experience. We had time for dinner last night with the family. The city here is beautiful. The weather is great. How can you not like playing in San Diego? They did a really great job of hosting the All-Star Game. It's been tremendous."
