SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Derek Holland is a Texas-sized supporter of Snapchat Day.
The Rangers' ebullient starting pitcher is a big fan of social media, a big fan of his fans, and, as it turns out, a Snapchat enthusiast. So naturally he'll be excited on Friday when Major League Baseball hosts Snapchat Day and players will be able to use the video-and-photo messaging app on their smartphones in the dugouts and bullpens of Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues.
As always, it's impossible to predict what Holland might do, but that's the whole point of paying attention.
"We're just having fun with it," Holland said of his Snapchat use, which recently has included updates on his offseason trip to Dubai, to the college football game between Ohio State and his beloved Michigan Wolverines, to the golf course and on the way to Surprise, Ariz., where he's now hunkered down with his teammates getting ready to go after a second consecutive American League West title.
"I like Snapchat, because it's with the guys, we're enjoying ourselves and it lets the fan really see what's going on in your world," Holland said.
"I'm pretty open. I share a lot of things. Obviously some people take it too far and think that it's distracting me from the game, but it's just who I am as a person. I like to interact with people. I'm a group kind of person. I like to be around a group of people."
Holland said he won't be quitting the medium any time soon.
"It's a fun thing," he said. "It lets the fans see who we are. I show them everything that's going on and just let them see that I'm a regular person as well."
