SEATTLE -- Tacitly acknowledging that Jeff Samardzija remains physically unfit to pitch, Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced Tuesday that Derek Holland will replace the right-hander, who is dealing with a sore shoulder, in the starting rotation.

Thus, Holland is scheduled to start Wednesday's series finale against the Mariners. This is no big deal for Holland, who has started in 18 of 22 appearances this season.

Bochy's remarks about Samardzija, however, sounded ominous.

"Samardzija needs a bit more time," Bochy said. "He'll rest for a couple of days and we'll re-evaluate the situation."

Bochy indicated that Samardzija, whose 1-5 record and 6.25 ERA was not what San Francisco expected from its projected No. 3 starter, won't pitch competitively until a consensus is reached that he's ready to do so.

"We don't want to push him. We've done this twice already," Bochy said, referring to Samardzija's previous pair of ill-fated attempts to leave the disabled list this year.

Worth noting
• Third baseman Evan Longoria sustained a bruise on his left biceps upon being hit by a pitch Sunday while playing with Triple-A Sacramento on his Minor League injury rehabilitation stint. According to Bochy, the medical staff is "fairly positive" that Longoria, who's on the disabled list with a fractured left hand, can resume playing on Wednesday.

• Second baseman Joe Panik (left groin) will begin his injury rehab stint with Sacramento on Thursday, Bochy said.
