D-backs protect 6 prospects from Rule 5

Banda, Leyba, Lugo, Reinheimer, Sherfy, Vargas added to 40-man roster

PHOENIX -- The D-backs set their 40-man roster Friday, adding six players while also losing six in the process.
Left-hander , infielder , infielder , infielder , right-hander Jimmie Sherfy and infielder Ildemaro Vargas were added to the roster, which protects them from being selected in next month's Rule 5 Draft.
To make room for those players on the roster, the D-backs designated and for assignment.
The D-backs also lost four players on waivers when pitchers (Indians), (Blue Jays) and (Rangers) along with catcher (Braves) were claimed.

Banda
The 23-year-old is the No. 2 prospect in the Arizona organization according to MLBPipeline.com, and he was named the team's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2016. Banda spent the year between Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno, going 10-6 with a 2.88 ERA. Acquired from the Brewers at the Trade Deadline in 2014, Banda participated in the 2016 All-Star Futures Game for Team USA.

Leyba
The 21-year-old is the No. 6 prospect in the organization, and he combined to hit .296 with 32 doubles, 10 homers and 60 RBIs in 130 games with Class A Advanced Visalia and Mobile. Leyba was acquired from the Tigers along with as part of a three-team deal that sent shortstop to the Yankees.
Lugo
The 21-year-old is the No. 10 prospect in the organization and just finished up playing in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .267 and was named to the East Division Fall Stars Team. This year, Lugo played shortstop and third base while hitting .311 with 23 doubles, seven triples, 17 homers and 62 RBIs for Visalia and Mobile. He was acquired from the Blue Jays in 2015 for .
Reinheimer
The 24-year-old is ranked as the D-backs' No. 9 prospect. Known for his defense at shortstop, Reinheimer hit .288 with 28 doubles, seven triples and two home runs in 48 games for Reno. He was acquired from the Mariners with , Leone and Guerrero on June 3, 2015, in exchange for and .
Sherfy
The 24-year-old is the No. 14-ranked prospect in the system, and he finished second among all Minor League pitchers in saves with 30. Sherfy saw time at Visalia, Mobile and Reno, going 3-4 with a 2.77 ERA. He was selected by the D-backs in the 10th round of the 2013 Draft.
Vargas
The 25-year-old played for Visalia, Mobile and Reno in 2016, hitting .305 with 28 doubles, six homers, 37 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 133 games. He was initially signed by the Cardinals as a undrafted free agent in 2008 and played in the St. Louis system until 2014. The D-backs signed him as a Minor League free agent on May 26, 2015.
