KANSAS CITY -- After right-hander Dillon Gee posted his first quality start of the season, it seemed as though the Royals might finally have some consistency at the No. 5 spot in the rotation. Instead, Gee was called on to pitch the final two innings of Wednesday night's 3-2 walk-off win in 14 innings against the White Sox, which put his scheduled start on Saturday in jeopardy.
"It would've been perfect if he had just thrown one," manager Ned Yost said. "Makes it a little bit more murky."
As for Saturday's starter, Yost said he isn't ruling anyone out. He has a couple of guys in mind, but that Gee isn't necessarily out of the mix either.
"He was supposed to throw a [side session] today," Yost said. "Last night was a little more effort than he would've thrown in a side, but depending on how he feels, he still might be ready to go."
As for Gee, he felt that he could still go on Saturday if needed. He noted his last start had come on Friday against the Blue Jays and he was fully stretched out.
Yost also said after Wednesday's game that Gee was built up enough to have thrown around 100 pitches if needed.
"I could've gone multiple innings, many, many more probably," Gee said. "In my mind, I [think] I'll be fine, because I'm used to throwing [bullpen sessions] and having one day off anyway ... but that decision is not up to me."
Cain's injury scare
In the sixth inning on Wednesday, outfielder Lorenzo Cain pulled up while tracking a single in right field. After the play, he stretched out his leg, but remained in the game.
"I just tried to plant and stop, and my knee ended up hyper-extending. Scared me a little bit," Cain said. "They asked me how I was ... I said, 'I feel good.' Skip is just giving me a day off."
Cain was not in the lineup for Thursday's game. Yost confirmed that Cain was "fine" in his pregame chat with reporters, saying that the length of the game the night before and weather all played into the decision to give Cain an off-day.
"We've been looking to give Lorenzo a day, give him a break," Yost said. "It's hot out there."
Davis progressing
All-Star closer Wade Davis' would be eligible to come off the disabled list on Friday. However, it'll probably be a little longer before Davis makes his return from a flexor strain.
"He's not coming back tomorrow," Yost said on Thursday.
Davis previously acknowledged that he may have rushed back from the DL on a previous stint in July, and said he'd "be careful" this time around.
Yost said Davis was throwing at 60 feet on Wednesday and 75 feet on Thursday. He expects Davis to be throwing off the mound in the "next day or so."
"He's thrown the last two days and thumbs up both days," Yost said. "He feels good."
