Spring Training cycles: It's a Mets thing

DJ Stewart's cycle means the last two in Spring Training are by Mets -- both vs. the Cards

March 19th, 2023

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Mets left fielder  hit for the cycle and drove in four runs in Sunday's 8-7 loss to the Cardinals at Clover Park.

The last player to hit for the cycle in Spring Training? That was another Met -- Johneshwy Fargas, who did it on March 5, 2020, against the very same Cardinals.

“You don’t see many people do it. I never did it my entire baseball career,” said Stewart, who raised his spring batting average to .435 (10-for-23). “Even though it’s a Spring Training game, I’m very excited about it.”

Stewart had to talk his way into getting his fourth and final at-bat in the seventh inning. But Stewart gave a hint to bench coach Eric Chavez that he was a home run away from the cycle.

“[Chavez] said if you get up this inning, you can have it,” Stewart said.

On the first pitch of the at-bat, Stewart clocked a breaking ball off right-hander Chris Stratton over the right-field wall to reach the cycle.
