NEW YORK -- Doctors believe they have determined the cause of Matthew Holliday's fatigue and body aches, the Yankees' designated hitter told the New York Post prior to Wednesday's 7-6 loss to the Blue Jays.
"There's a virus called Epstein-Barr virus that I tested positive for," Holliday told the Post. "There are some tests that aren't back yet."
Holliday participated in optional batting practice prior to Wednesday's series finale, and he was able to slug balls into the left-field seats -- a good sign considering his weary appearance on the Yanks' recent road trip.
"We're still waiting for some of the test results, but he took BP today, which tells me he's feeling better," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We're kind of keeping it low key, but we're kind of excited about it."
The 37-year-old hasn't played in a game since June 24, but he told the Post that he does not believe he will need a Minor League rehabilitation assignment before returning. Holliday is eligible to come off the 10-day disabled list on Thursday, which is a Yankees off-day.
Holliday's issues began on June 17 in Oakland, when he was held out of the lineup with what the Yankees believed was an allergic reaction. He was placed on the disabled list last Wednesday with what the club termed a viral infection.
In 68 games this season, Holliday is batting .262/.366/.511 with 13 doubles, 15 home runs and 47 RBIs.
