PHOENIX -- When the Dodgers acquired Trea Turner back in July, the initial question was where the All-Star would play defensively. There are very few teams where Turner, who is one of the most dynamic players in baseball, doesn’t immediately become the starting shortstop.

Instead, Turner had to slide to second base, a position he played earlier in his career. That’s how talented the Dodgers’ roster is. But more importantly, that’s how highly the Dodgers think of Corey Seager, who carried the club to a World Series title in 2020 as the starting shortstop.

On Sunday, Seager and Turner showed why they’re one of the most talented middle infield duos in the Majors, combining for three homers to carry the Dodgers to a 3-0 win over the D-backs at Chase Field. The Dodgers became just the sixth defending champion to win 100 or more games since 1969.

The win also helped the Dodgers stay two games behind the Giants, who wrapped up a 6-2 win against the Rockies on Sunday, in the National League West race with six games remaining in the regular season.

“We’ve been really good for a really long time,” Seager said about the Dodgers winning 100 games for the third time in five seasons. “We’ve had a lot of guys come through here and play really well for us and we’ve had a really good core. To play like that every year and to win 100 games, you know, it’s not easy. It’s a testament to those guys in that locker room.”

After a disappointing loss to the D-backs on Saturday, Seager and Turner wasted no time getting the Dodgers back on track. Seager hit a first-inning opposite-field homer off D-backs right-hander Humberto Mejía to open the scoring. On the very next pitch, Turner launched his third homer in as many at-bats, giving the Dodgers an early 2-0 lead. The blast was Turner’s 100th of his career.

In the third, Seager also joined the 100-homer club. He jumped on Mejía once again, crushing his second homer of the game, a 464-foot blast to give the Dodgers a 3-0 lead. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Seager and Turner became the first pair of teammates to record their 100th career homers in the same game since Jay Gibbons and Melvin Mora accomplished the feat on Sept. 27, 2005.

“Man, it was pretty impressive,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “Corey has been swinging the bat extremely well over the last three weeks, really well. He’s taking great at-bats. Trea just continued what he did last night. Getting that production from those two guys is just going to make us that much better.”

With the Dodgers’ middle infield doing all of the damage at the plate, starter Julio Urías continued his breakout season. Urías’ velocity dipped for the third consecutive start, but he’s been able to figure out ways to remain effective. The left-hander delivered five scoreless innings against the D-backs, notching his Major League-leading 19th win of the season. Urías is the first 19-game winner for the Dodgers since Zack Greinke in 2015. He’ll get the ball on Friday against the Brewers, looking to become L.A.’s first 20-game winner since Clayton Kershaw won 21 in '14.

“It’ll be a dream come true,” Urías said of potentially winning 20 games. “Being a starter and winning games, I think, is something that’s really important. To have this opportunity in my next start, let’s just wait and see what happens, but hopefully we can come away with another victory.”

After Urías exited the game, Justin Bruihl, Joe Kelly, Corey Knebel and Kenley Jansen combined to toss four scoreless innings to complete the shutout against Arizona. The Dodgers went 15-3 against the D-backs this season.

Los Angeles wrapped up the nine-game road trip with a 6-3 record, but was unable to pick up any ground on San Francisco in the division. The Dodgers wrap up the regular season with a six-game homestand against the Padres and Brewers, which begins on Tuesday. They hope it ends with a ninth consecutive division title.

“Winning 100 games is something to be proud of,” Roberts said. “But we understand that we still have to win six more ballgames.”
