PHOENIX -- Dodgers infielder Howie Kendrick was scratched from the lineup for Monday's 8-5 Cactus League loss to Cleveland with right groin soreness.
Manager Dave Roberts said Kendrick told him he could have played, but the club was being "extra cautious." Roberts said no tests were taken and Kendrick would be re-evaluated on Tuesday to determine if an MRI is needed.
Roberts said Kendrick first felt discomfort during drills on Sunday, felt better Monday morning, but was scratched after he tried doing drills again before Monday's game.
Rob Segedin replaced Kendrick at third base and Shawn Zarraga took over for Segedin as designated hitter. Segedin had an RBI double and walked in three plate appearances on Monday.
Kendrick, 32, was signed to a two-year, $20 million contract last month after finding a lukewarm reception on the free-agent market. He hit .295 last year for the Dodgers, but also spent five weeks on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring.
