BOSTON -- After Dustin Pedroia missed a third straight game Monday due to recurring soreness in his left knee, the Red Sox placed the second baseman on the 10-day disabled list on Tuesday (retroactive to Saturday) due to inflammation in the knee.
Pedroia was scheduled to see a knee specialist in the Boston area on Tuesday. The Red Sox added pitcher Addison Reed, acquired from the Mets prior to Monday's non-waiver Trade Deadline, to the 25-man roster.
"Obviously he's been dealing with the inflammation in the left knee," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "As we got to this point of inactivity, we had some lengthy conversations on how he's responding, which there's some improvement there, but felt like the time down to make room for Addison, this was the move to get him on the DL and we're hopeful he's back to us at the end of the 10-day stint."

Pedroia had left knee surgery last October.
One thing that certainly hasn't done Pedroia any favors is a grueling stretch of games the Red Sox have had in the second half, including three games that went 13 innings or longer.
"As the volume has picked up and the hours that he has spent on the field in games, it felt like we just need to take a step back and address it as far as the treatment goes and get him back to us as best as possible," Farrell said.
"I think a lot of times it's a cumulative aspect of wear and tear," said Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski on Monday. "I don't know if there's a specific event this time that hurt him a little bit more than others, but he has a bad knee that he's going to have to watch and we're going to have to watch for the rest of his career."
The Red Sox are better able to deal with the loss of Pedroia now that they have Eduardo Nunez, who was acquired in a trade with the Giants last week. Brock Holt, who missed two months with vertigo, is also healthy again and able to help spell Pedroia.
But Pedroia's loss -- short or long term -- is never good for Boston. Pedroia has been a key cog for the Red Sox as usual this season, slashing .307/.381/.411 with six homers and 54 RBIs and playing strong defense at second base.
Worth noting
• David Price had a ball in his hand for the first time since going on the disabled list, making 25 throws at 60 feet before Tuesday's game. The team would like to increase the distance on Wednesday.
"This will be a causal building back out to tolerance," Farrell said. "Felt good enough today to put a ball back in his hands, so an encouraging day."
• Sandy Leon has dealt with swelling in his right knee since sliding into home base for the winning run in Saturday's 9-8 win over Kansas City. Farrell said Leon was available in an emergency and should be back in a starting role in a few days.
• Reliever Carson Smith could face hitters by Thursday. Farrell said the club is hopeful Smith will begin a rehab stint over the weekend.
