BOSTON -- On Thursday, Eduardo Rodriguez made his first rehab start since landing on the disabled list with a right knee subluxation on June 2.
Pitching for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, Rodriguez threw 69 pitches, 46 for strikes, in three innings of work, but allowed five earned runs on nine hits, including a leadoff home run to Blue Jays prospect Jonathan Davis. More importantly, the southpaw came out of the outing OK.
"He came out of it physically fine. The knee felt fine," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "I know what the line score says. So we'll get a chance to talk to him after he gets checked out tomorrow, and we'll plan out the course from there."
The Red Sox expect Rodriguez to join the club on their upcoming 10-game road trip but were waiting to evaluate him in person before deciding what the next course of action may be for the 24-year-old.
"I don't know if he's going to be able to make it here and join us on this flight to Toronto tonight," Farrell said. "But he'll report to Toronto if he doesn't make the flight."
Prior to landing on the disabled list, Rodriguez was 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA in 11 outings for the Red Sox this season.
