DENVER -- Rockies No. 1 prospect -- and MLB Pipeline's No. 17 prospect -- will undergo surgery for a stress fracture in his left foot and miss the remainder of the season, a source told MLB.com on Friday.

The club had not announced the surgery. The decision came after several examinations that have occurred since Holliday was scratched from Fresno's lineup last Thursday.

Surgery date has not been set, but the belief is that his recovery will take until late in the year.

Holliday, 19, batted .262 with nine home runs and 32 RBIs over 33 games in his first full professional season. Drafted fourth overall and signed to a $9 million bonus that stands as a record for a player signed out of high school, Holliday caught fire this month, hitting .295 with six homers, four doubles and a triple in 15 May games at Single-A Fresno.

It wasn't clear when or how the injury occurred.

Holliday is son of former Rockies star and Cardinals World Series winner Matt Holliday, and younger brother of Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday.

Last year was a whirlwind after the Rockies drafted Ethan Holliday out of Stillwater (Okla.) High School. He immediately played at the Arizona Bridge League, was advanced to Fresno (.239, 2 HR, 6 RBIs in 18 games), then was assigned to the instructional program Scottsdale, Ariz., to acclimate to the volume of work pro baseball entails.
