CHICAGO – Nine innings passed without either team pushing a run across on Thursday afternoon at Rate Field. Once it finally happened, the home team was celebrating its second walk-off in as many games.
After battling back from a 3-0 count to strike out Colson Montgomery, Fernando Cruz couldn’t repeat the trick a second time, firing four straight out of the zone to walk Tristan Peters with the bases loaded. The Yankees fell to the White Sox, 2-1, in 11 innings.
Having absorbed a 12-inning loss on Wednesday, New York settled for a split of the four-game series. The Yankees have lost eight of their nine extra-inning games this season.
Trent Grisham knocked in the contest’s first run with a 10th-inning single, but Andrew Benintendi answered with a game-tying knock in the home half facing Angel Chivilli.
New York was 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position before Grisham’s hit and finished the game 1-for-15. They left 11 men on base.
Already dealing with significant injuries to stars Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees saw Jazz Chisholm Jr. slowed by cramps in his right leg. Chisholm limped off the field after a ninth-inning groundout, but he continued to play until exiting for a pinch-runner in the 11th.
Ryan Weathers permitted three hits over seven scoreless innings, providing a boost for a Yankees bullpen that has been worked heavily on this trip. The left-hander walked three and struck out four in a 106-pitch effort (62 strikes), generating 11 ground-ball outs.
The Yankees were unable to break through against Sean Burke, who struck out 10 over six scoreless innings. Burke permitted three hits and two walks.
Jasson Domínguez’s sixth-inning baserunning mishap could have decided the outcome sooner. Domínguez belted an extra-base hit that rattled into the right-field corner, racing to third base with what appeared to be a leadoff triple. Diving headfirst, Domínguez slid past the bag and was tagged out.
