SAN DIEGO -- It was (almost) all good news for the Diamondbacks on Friday.
They beat the Padres, 11-4, and the Phillies lost to the Rays to cut Arizona's deficit in the race for the final NL Wild Card spot to one game with two to play.
There was one lingering concern, though, when catcher Gabriel Moreno was removed from the game in the seventh inning with what manager Torey Lovullo said was a "tender" left hamstring.
Moreno scored from first base on a three-run double from Geraldo Perdomo in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Lovullo said he did not believe the injury was serious, no imaging was scheduled to be taken and he had Moreno penciled in Saturday's lineup as the designated hitter.
Just to be on the safe side, though, the Diamondbacks designated outfielder Jesús Sánchez for assignment. Sánchez was ineligible for the postseason roster and the move clears a spot on the roster for the Diamondbacks to bring up a catcher, presumably Adrian Del Castillo.
Having another catcher would allow Moreno to just be a DH the final two games of the season if need be.
Moreno's bat in the lineup is key for the Diamondbacks, as he has carried their offense in the second half.
Moreno raised his batting average to .311, which leads the NL. He is ahead of Philadelphia's Luis Arraez, who has a .310 mark and is unlikely to play the rest of the regular season due to an ankle injury suffered on Thursday.
Moreno would be the first catcher to win an NL batting title since Buster Posey did it for the Giants in 2012.
