Yankees activate Sanchez from injured list

August 10th, 2019

TORONTO -- is back with the Yankees in Toronto after being activated before Saturday's game against the Blue Jays.

In other moves, the Yankees optioned catcher Kyle Higashioka to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, recalled left-hander Stephen Tarpley from Triple-A and placed right-hander Jonathan Holder on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation (retroactive to Wednesday).

Sanchez had on the injured list since July 24 with a left groin strain. Sanchez was most recently on a Minor League rehab assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he played in two games and went 1-for-5.

“He should be fairly good to go," Boone said Friday. "I don’t know if I’d catch him Saturday and Sunday, especially with the doubleheader Monday. So I’ll probably split those first few days up, but I’m not looking at it as easing him back in.”

Sanchez is batting .229/.299/.508 with 24 home runs and 58 RBIs in 77 games this season. After a red-hot start, the 26-year-old slumped through late June and July, batting just .118 with a single homer in 21 games from June 23 to July 23 before landing on the IL.

“Hitting’s hard, even for the great ones," Boone said. "You never know what the immediate results are going to be, whether you come out like gangbusters or you scuffle a little bit. But I know over time he’s going to be a force for us, and that’s the expectation."

The Yankees have continued to play well in Sanchez's absence, going 11-4 in the 15 games he's missed, including their current nine-game winning streak.

Catchers and Higashioka have combined to hit .339 with seven home runs and 19 RBIs while filling in for Sanchez.

“They’ve been huge. Those guys have really stepped up for us," Boone said. "They’ve not only caught well, but the offensive production that we got from them ... I feel like going back now a few weeks, Ro’s really started the swing the bat well. And as we sprinkled Kyle in there, he’s had some big at-bats for us."
