NEW YORK -- Giants left fielder Angel Pagan left Sunday's 6-1 victory over the New York Mets with a strained left hamstring, which he sustained while running the bases in the seventh inning.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy described the injury as "mild" and expressed hope that Pagan could return in two or three days. That will be determined after Pagan is re-examined Monday. Pagan agreed with Bochy.
"I don't think it's anything that's really bad," he said after San Francisco's series finale at Citi Field.
However, given the combination of the injuries to Pagan and second baseman Joe Panik (right groin), the Giants don't intend to leave themselves undermanned. Bochy said he will "huddle up" with members of the Giants' front office to determine the club's next move.
Pagan's mishap occurred after he singled to left-center field with two outs in the seventh, scoring Kelby Tomlinson. Pagan hurt himself as he stopped to create a rundown halfway between first and second base. Trying not to worsen his injury, Pagan allowed himself to be tagged out and left the field immediately with head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner.
Pagan, 34, went on the disabled list with left hamstring injuries in 2006 and 2013.
Having endured sore knees that limited his productivity last season, Pagan has rebounded this year to compile a .315 batting average with two home runs and 13 RBIs while starting all but one of San Francisco's' 26 games. His 28 hits entering Sunday were tied for ninth-most in the National League and he has batted .429 (9-for-21) with runners in scoring position.
Should Pagan go on the disabled list, the Giants would have at least two outfield candidates for promotion from Triple-A Sacramento: Mac Williamson and Jarrett Parker. Williamson, who went 0-for-3 with San Francisco in a brief callup earlier this season, owned a .362 batting average, a .391 on-base percentage and a .655 slugging percentage in his first 14 games with Sacramento. He also had four home runs and 17 RBIs. Parker's batting average has hovered around the .200 level for most of the season, but he clobbered three home runs Sunday at Salt Lake.
