MESA, Ariz. -- Matt Duffy hit an RBI single and a solo home run to back Jeff Samardzija and lead the Giants to a 5-2 victory Saturday over the Cubs in front of 15,403 at Sloan Park.
Samardzija retired the first 11 batters before Kyle Schwarber lofted a single to right with two outs in the fourth. The right-hander, who was drafted by the Cubs and played for the team from 2008 until he was traded in July 2014, struck out four and scattered five hits over six innings. One of those hits was a solo home run by Addison Russell, whom the Athletics traded to the Cubs to get Samardzija.

John Lackey, expected to be slotted into the No. 3 spot in the Cubs' rotation, gave up five runs on six hits over five-plus innings, striking out six.
"It took me a little while to get loose today," Lackey said. "The location wasn't great in the first inning. I found a groove there in the middle part and got some work in."

Angel Pagan greeted Lackey with a single to start the game, then stole second and scored on Duffy's bloop single to shallow right. One out later, Duffy stole second, and then scored on Gregor Blanco's single for a 2-0 lead.

Schwarber robbed Joe Panik of a potential extra-base hit when he caught Panik's fly ball one step away from the wall in left. Duffy, who finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, then cleared the fence in left-center with his second spring home run to open a 3-0 lead.
Munenori Kawasaki, battling for a spot on the Cubs' bench, and Jesus Guzman hit back-to-back doubles with two outs in the fifth to make it 3-1.

Up next for Cubs:Jason Hammel will make his fifth Cactus League start on Sunday when the Cubs host the Mariners at Sloan Park in Mesa. Hammel has given up two earned runs over 15 innings this spring, while striking out 14. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CT, and the game will be broadcast on MLB.TV and Gameday Audio.
