SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants avoided another costly injury Tuesday night when X-rays taken on first baseman Brandon Belt's right foot were negative, revealing no fracture.
The National League West-leading Giants were forced to consider the worst-case scenario after Belt left the Giants' 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in the seventh inning, one inning after he was struck on the right foot by a Carlos Torres pitch.
Belt has been relatively injury-free this year, appearing in all but two of San Francisco's 66 games. He has endured concussions as well as hand and wrist injuries in previous years.
With right fielder Hunter Pence expected to be sidelined by a strained right hamstring until August, the Giants could ill-afford to lose Belt, who's hitting .301 and owns a streak of reaching base safely in 25 consecutive home games.
Belt declined to comment to reporters, largely because he had not yet learned of the X-ray results when he was at his dressing stall. However, he was plainly enthused by riding a miniature scooter that enabled him to move around the clubhouse without walking and putting pressure on his foot.
"This thing is sweet," he said.
