Giants suspend training at Arizona facility

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants closed their facility in Scottsdale, Ariz., after a person who visited the complex and a family member exhibited coronavirus symptoms, the club confirmed Friday.

The visitor, along with approximately 20 other people who have been at the facility, has undergone testing and is currently awaiting the results. The Athletic was the first to report the development.

Arizona reported a total of 3,246 new coronavirus cases on Friday, setting a single-day record in the state. The surge prompted Scottsdale mayor Jim Lane to issue an emergency proclamation that requires people to cover their nose and mouth in most public areas beginning on Friday.

The Giants are not the only team to take action to combat the spread of the coronavirus, which halted baseball operations across the league in March.

The Phillies closed their facility in Clearwater, Fla., after announcing that five players and three staff members had tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

The Blue Jays, who are based out of nearby Dunedin, Fla., also suspended training at their complex after one player on their 40-man roster developed symptoms.
