If Statcast had been around during the playing days of legendary Giants sluggers like Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Barry Bonds, their names would likely feature prominently on the leaderboard for longest home runs in franchise history. Alas, the tracking technology wasn’t introduced until 2015, leaving many fans to wonder about the extent of their prodigious power.
Since its inception, Statcast has helped eliminate the guesswork and provided fans with another tool to appreciate the feats of current Giants power hitters. Here’s a look at the club’s five longest home runs in the Statcast era:
1. Brandon Crawford -- April 29, 2023 vs. SD
Distance: 482 feet
Balls were flying when the Giants traveled to Mexico City to face the Padres at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú in 2023, as evidenced by Crawford’s historic moonshot off Joe Musgrove. Crawford thought he cleared the fences when he sent a drive down the right-field line, though he was forced to return to the batter’s box when the ball was ruled foul following a replay review. On the very next pitch, Crawford sent a no-doubter out to left-center field, becoming the first of 10 different hitters to go deep in the game, which tied an AL/NL record.
2. Alex Dickerson -- Sept. 1, 2020 at COL
Distance: 480 feet
Dickerson launched a down-and-in changeup from Rockies right-hander Jon Gray all the way to the third deck in right field at Coors to produce his mammoth 480-foot blast. It marked the beginning of a historic offensive performance for Dickerson, who crushed three home runs to lead the Giants to a 23-5 rout of the Rockies. Dickerson tallied 16 total bases after finishing the night with three homers and two doubles, tying Hall of Famer Mays for the most in a game in franchise history.
“That's by far the best game I've had in my life,” Dickerson said.
3. Jorge Soler -- July 21, 2024 at COL
Distance: 478 feet
Soler wasn’t a Giant for long -- he was traded to the Braves five months after signing a three-year, $42 million deal in February 2024 -- but he certainly flashed some prodigious power during his brief stint with the club. The Cuban slugger kicked off San Francisco’s 3-2 win over the Rockies with a bang, mashing a 478-foot leadoff tank that proved to be the second-longest home run in the Majors in 2024.
4. Brandon Belt -- May 22, 2015 at COL
Distance: 475 feet
A few Giants have broken the mark previously held by Belt, who also reached the third deck at Coors with his 475-foot homer in 2015. Still, Belt might not be ready to concede bragging rights, as the veteran first baseman has maintained that his drive actually traveled farther than Statcast’s projection.
5. LaMonte Wade Jr. -- April 29, 2023 vs. SD
Distance: 474 feet
Crawford and Wade ended up going back to back off Musgrove in the Mexico City Series opener, with Wade’s shot traveling an equally astounding 474 feet out to right-center field. Mexico City, of course, sits at 7,350 feet above sea level -- 2,000 feet higher than Coors Field in Denver -- creating an extremely favorable environment for hitters.
