ATLANTA -- Giants third baseman Matt Duffy emerged with a bruise after he was hit just above his left wrist by a pitch from Atlanta starter Mike Foltynewicz in the sixth inning of the Braves' 5-3 victory Monday.
Duffy, who owns a .242 batting average and typically hits third in San Francisco's lineup, temporarily lost sensation in his left hand.
"I wasn't in pain right off the bat," Duffy said. "I just think it wasn't a good thing to take 96 [mph] right there."
Duffy underwent X-rays that showed no fracture and is on day-to-day playing status. He insisted he didn't contemplate the worst-case scenario as he awaited the X-ray results.
"I didn't think about it too much," he said. "Obviously, it started getting sore, but I tried moving it around a little bit, twisting and squeezing it, and all that was pretty OK. Other than being sore, there were no sharp, stabbing pains in there."
• Giants manager Bruce Bochy reiterated Albert Suarez will likely start Wednesday against Atlanta. However, Bochy added, the Giants will wait to see whether Suarez is needed out of the bullpen Tuesday before officially handing him the assignment.
