SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Giants outfielder Chris Shaw received this year's Barney Nugent Award in a vote consisting of Giants players, coaches and athletic training staff.
The award is given to recognize the player in his first big league camp whose performance and dedication in Spring Training best exemplified the spirit of the San Francisco Giants and of Nugent, who was the team's athletic trainer from 1993-2000.
Shaw, widely considered the organization's top power-hitting prospect, hit .235 (8-for-34) with two home runs and five RBIs in 20 Cactus League exhibition games this spring.

"I came into camp kind of with the thinking of be seen and not heard, and to take it day by day, trying to learn something from the veteran guys," said Shaw, 24. "I couldn't be happier that they viewed me as a guy who worked hard."

Posey, Belt to switch roles
Catcher Buster Posey, whose three-run homer in the third inning was integral to the Giants' 4-3 exhibition victory over the Cubs, will start at first base in Friday's Cactus League finale against Kansas City, with regular first baseman Brandon Belt moving to left field.

"I wanted to check off these boxes," manager Bruce Bochy said, explaining that Posey, who starts between 20 and 35 games at first each season, needed some playing time at first base.
Along those lines, Bochy wanted Belt to receive some activity in left, where he has started 58 times in his career.
