Giants sign top Draft picks Bishop, Wyatt

June 30th, 2019

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants have officially signed their top two picks from their 2019 Draft class, reaching agreements with Arizona State outfielder Hunter Bishop and Louisville first baseman Logan Wyatt on Saturday.

Bishop, the 10th overall pick of the 2019 Draft, signed for $4.1 million, more than $600,000 below slot value, according to MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis. Wyatt, a second-round selection, also signed an under-slot deal worth $1 million.

According to Callis, the Giants also signed Louisville shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald, a fourth-round pick, for $497,500, the recommended bonus for that spot. Texas Tech right-hander Caleb Kilian, an eighth-round pick, received $400,000, significantly above the $176,300 slot value.

By striking under-slot deals with their top two picks, the Giants were able to redirect nearly $1 million toward locking up some of their top high school selections, most of whom require a bit more convincing to forgo their college commitments and begin their professional careers. Grant McCray (third round), Garrett Frechette (fifth round) and Dilan Rosario (sixth round) were among the high school picks who received over-slot deals from the Giants this year.

The Giants have now signed their top 10 picks and 23 of their first 24 selections from the 2019 Draft. Eleventh-rounder Trevor McDonald, a high school right-hander from Mississippi, remains unsigned, though he previously told the Biloxi Sun Herald that he planned to eschew his commitment to South Alabama to sign with the Giants.

Baer set to return as CEO
The Giants announced Saturday that Larry Baer will return to his role as team president and CEO following the completion of his three-month suspension Tuesday. Board member Rob Dean, who served as the acting CEO in Baer's absence, will transition to the newly created role of chairman and continue to serve as the MLB designated control person, representing the Giants in league matters.

President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi will now report to Dean.
