A's play-by-play man Glen Kuiper will not return to booth

SEATTLE – Longtime A’s play-by-play announcer Glen Kuiper, who was suspended by NBC Sports California on May 6, will not be returning to the team's broadcast booth.

Following an internal investigation after Kuiper said a racial slur during a broadcast of the A’s-Royals game in Kansas City on May 5, NBC Sports California issued the following statement on Monday:

“The decision has been made for NBC Sports California to end its relationship with Glen Kuiper, effective immediately. We thank Glen for his dedication to Bay Area baseball over the years.”

Kuiper was in his 20th season calling A’s games. He began working on A’s broadcasts in 2004 as a fill-in announcer and on-field correspondent before taking over as the team’s lead play-by-play TV broadcaster in 2006.

Kuiper issued an on-air apology during the May 5 broadcast and released a statement through NBCSBA the next day:

“I could not be more sorry and horrified by what I said,” Kuiper said in the statement. “I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies.”

The A’s released a statement shortly after the conclusion of the May 5 broadcast regarding the incident:

“The language used by Glen Kuiper during today’s pregame broadcast is unacceptable,” the statement read. “The Oakland Athletics do not condone such language. We are working to address the situation.”

Kuiper used the slur during the A’s Pregame Show when talking about his visit to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum earlier in the day with broadcast partner Dallas Braden. Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, issued a statement in response:

“I’m aware of the unfortunate slur made by Glen Kuiper,” Kendrick said. “I welcomed Glen to the NLBM yesterday and know he was genuinely excited to be here. The word is painful and has no place in our society. And while I don’t pretend to know Glen’s heart, I do know that my heart is one of forgiveness. I hope all of you will find it in yourselves to do the same!”
