DENVER -- Paul Goldschmidt continued his domination of the Rockies with two homers and five RBIs, and A.J. Pollock doubled and tripled as the D-backs won, 6-3, to pull to a half-game behind Colorado in the National League West.
Goldschmidt knocked a solo shot in the first and a three-run homer in the third, and the D-backs first baseman has reached in 57 of his last 58 games against the Rockies, batting .379 with a .487 on-base percentage over that span.
"Obviously Goldy had the huge night," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "I think the three-run home run really gave us a boost of momentum, and we seemed to capitalize on that in all areas. He's got a great approach. ... He can beat you in so many ways, and today is just a case of him hitting two home runs and helping us win the game."

Pollock tripled to open the game and doubled in the third. The offense buoyed D-backs starter Zack Greinke (3-2), who struck out seven in seven innings and held the Rockies two runs, improving to 3-0 with a 4.03 ERA in nine career games at Coors Field. More >

Rockies rookie German Marquez (0-2), who on Sunday held the D-backs scoreless and fanned eight in six innings, paid for the four pitches left in the hot zones of Goldschmidt and Pollock. Marquez yielded five runs and five hits in six innings. More >
The only run support for Marquez came on Mark Reynolds' team-high ninth homer, off Greinke in the fourth.
"He was vintage Greinke tonight, throwing his slider on the black away, high fastballs -- he was really good," Reynolds said.
The Rockies loaded the bases in the ninth and added a run on Pat Valaika's fielder's choice grounder, but Fernando Rodney earned his eighth save by working Charlie Blackmon into a flyout to right.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Bad time for a free pass: After Goldschmidt's first homer, Marquez retired six straight before Pollock doubled with one down in the third. Marquez was still keeping it close, but he walked David Peralta -- a mistake with Goldschmidt on deck. Goldschmidt crushed an 0-1 fastball, and the D-backs led, 5-0.
"That was a great at-bat by him," Goldschmidt said of Peralta.

Long night ahead: Greinke finished off the first inning with a strikeout of Ian Desmond that showed it would be his night. Greinke fired three straight sliders almost to the same exact spot -- near the low, outside corner -- and had a strikeout. He would dominate with his pinpoint location.
"It's tough against a guy like that, and when you give him a big lead, it makes him even tougher," said Desmond, who is 1-for-19 with seven strikeouts against Greinke.

AFTER FURTHER REVIEW
With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, Rockies manager Bud Black challenged whether a called third strike from D-backs reliever Archie Bradley actually hit Dustin Garneau's pinkie. After replay review was ruled inconclusive, the strikeout stood.

Garneau was certain.
"I knew I got hit," said Garneau, who had an RBI double in the seventh. "An RBI at that time brings the winning run to the plate. But they missed it."

WHAT'S NEXT
D-backs:Patrick Corbin (2-3, 2.29 ERA) will make his second straight start against the Rockies on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. MST at Coors Field. Corbin pitched well against Colorado at Chase Field on Sunday, when he worked 6 1/3 scoreless innings.
Rockies: Lefty Tyler Anderson (1-3, 7.71 ERA), who gave up a career-high six earned runs against the D-backs last Saturday but was saved by an offensive comeback, will face Arizona again on Saturday at 6:10 p.m. MT.
