Canning confident, healthy after PRP injection

ANAHEIM -- Right-hander said he’s healthy and ready for the season after receiving a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in his right elbow in early March.

Canning’s elbow responded well to the injection, and he’s been throwing without any issues at Angel Stadium. He started facing batters in early May, is already up to 60 pitches and believes he’ll be stretched out to at least six innings before the start of the season on July 23 or 24. The addition of Canning is a huge boost for the Angels, especially if Julio Teheran isn’t ready to start the season.

“I feel like it will always be around, it’s something I’m gonna have to work with and manage, but I definitely feel 10 times better than I did in the spring,” Canning said via Zoom on Sunday. “So I’m very happy about that. It’s more something I need to stay on top of it. Biggest thing is bouncing back after an outing, figuring out what works best for me. I feel confident it’s going to hold up.”

Canning, 24, is coming off a solid rookie year that saw him post a 4.58 ERA with 96 strikeouts, 30 walks and 14 homers allowed in 90 1/3 innings. Manager Joe Maddon saw Canning throw before his injury in Spring Training and has come away impressed by what the Mission Viejo, Calif., native brings.

“I’ve been impressed since the first time I saw him,” Maddon said. “This guy is a premier pitcher, not just a pitcher. With good health, he’ll have a great Major League career.”

Canning’s health will be key this season and beyond, but he believes he has it under control and he's taking the proper steps to take care of his elbow. He used the last few months to tinker with his routine and find ways to make sure his elbow doesn’t stiffen up after throwing.

“That’s been the last few months, just playing around with different things, one thing’s doing been icing elbow and riding the bike at the same time,” Canning said. “Other than that, pretty much just normal stuff, figuring out routine between starts to bounce back as quickly as you can.”

Canning further explained that he never felt pain with his elbow in Spring Training, but that his elbow was stiffening up and affecting his range of motion after throwing. The results of PRP injections can be mixed, but Canning is confident it worked and he’s benefited from the injection. It also helped that he didn’t have to miss any games because the season was pushed back.

“Selfishly, the timing definitely worked out for me,” Canning said. “I got that PRP shot, and it’s done a really good job of helping it continue to heal. Then building back into routine these next few months has been really helpful. It just feels like normal, honestly, like my elbow has felt in the past, when I haven’t had any issues with it. That’s probably the best way to explain it.”
