MIAMI -- When you walked into the Marlins clubhouse at loanDepot park on Wednesday morning ahead of their 8-6 win over the Phillies, the smiles from the first half were back after Miami secured the series against Philadelphia.
In the Marlins' sweep of the Phillies, Miami appeared ready to change the script with its bats. On Wednesday, the big swing belonged to Griffin Conine, who hit a pinch-hit, two-run go-ahead homer in the eighth inning.
Miami swept the Phillies for the first time since winning three games in Philly from June 21-23, 2019, and completed its first home series sweep over the Phillies since May 29-31, 2017.
By the bottom of the fifth, the Marlins had managed just one hit -- an Otto Lopez single in the third -- and trailed 6-0. Esteury Ruiz doubled to lead off the inning before later scoring on a Lopez groundout.
With Brian Navarreto on second after being hit by a pitch and a sac bunt, Heriberto Hernández turned on a changeup and launched a Statcast-projected 416-foot, two-run shot to left-center field (his 16th of the season) to cut the deficit in half.
Javier Sanoja doubled to lead off the sixth before the Phillies turned a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play after Kyle Stowers struck out. Philadelphia challenged the initial safe call at third, and the replay review ruled Sanoja out attempting to steal.
Ruiz decided to test catcher J.T. Realmuto's arm in the bottom of the seventh after lining a single to center. He advanced to third when Realmuto's throw to second sailed into center field, then scored on Lopez's RBI single to make it 6-4, as the Phillies went to their bullpen after Jesús Luzardo exited following 6 1/3 innings.
The Marlins loaded the bases for Xavier Edwards, who lined a single to left field to score Jakob Marsee, who drew a walk, and Lopez to tie the game at 6.
