CLEVELAND -- Joey Cantillo may have started his career in the Padres organization, but he’s grown up professionally with the Guardians. On Saturday, the left-hander delivered a much-needed performance that also helped Cleveland achieve a major franchise milestone.
Cantillo led the reeling Guardians to a 6-1 win over the Padres at Progressive Field on Saturday, when he tossed six innings and allowed just one run on one hit and three walks with seven strikeouts. It was a much-needed effort for the Guardians, who entered Saturday 8-18 since the All-Star break and 3-9 in July.
The win marked No. 10,000 in Cleveland franchise history. The Guardians joined the Red Sox and Yankees as the only teams to reach that milestone, among franchises established since 1900.
Cantillo was the Padres’ 16th-round Draft pick in 2017, whom Cleveland acquired in the trade that sent Mike Clevinger to San Diego in ‘20. Saturday marked his second career appearance against the Padres, and after an inauspicious start, he was brilliant.
Cantillo issued a leadoff walk to Fernando Tatis Jr. in the first inning, and after a Jake Cronenworth single, he came around to score on a Manny Machado 5-4-3 double play. Cantillo held San Diego to just two walks after that.
Cantillo got early support from Jo Adell, who drove in José Ramírez with an RBI double. Ramírez reached on a double of his own, which marked his first extra-base hit since June 13, when he suffered his left hamate fracture.
Patrick Bailey and Steven Kwan each added an RBI double, and Ramírez added a sac fly.
