CLEVELAND -- Sunday’s series finale between the Guardians and Tigers at Progressive Field was postponed due to the threat of inclement weather in Northeast Ohio.
The game is scheduled to be made up on Friday, Sept. 4 at 2:10 p.m. ET, as part of a split doubleheader. The originally scheduled contest (which was part of a three-game series between Cleveland and Detroit) is set for 7:10 p.m.
Sunday’s postponement announcement came within an hour of the scheduled first pitch of 1:40 p.m. ET. The forecast called for rain throughout the afternoon, and while the Guardians have an off-day Monday, the Tigers are set to open a three-game series against the Astros in Houston.
Gates for the first game on Sept. 4 will open at 1 p.m., and gates for the originally scheduled game will open at 6 p.m. Fans holding tickets for Sunday’s game can use their exact ticket to enter the ballpark for the 2:10 p.m. contest.
Troy Melton (Monday) and Framber Valdez (Tuesday) are the Tigers’ probable starters to begin their series in Houston. Casey Mize is expected to start Wednesday. He was slated to be activated off the 10-day injured list to start on Sunday. Detroit will instead carry an extra position player for the next couple of days in Houston.
Slade Cecconi (Tuesday), Gavin Williams (Wednesday) and Parker Messick (Thursday) are the Guardians’ probables for their series against the Brewers at American Family Field in Milwaukee. Tanner Bibee (Friday) and Joey Cantillo (Saturday) are set to start the first two games against the Astros next weekend.
Cecconi was in line to start on Tuesday. Williams is now in line to take the ball for Cleveland’s series opener against the White Sox on June 22 at Rate Field. The Guardians (39-33) entered Sunday in first place in the AL Central and a half-game ahead of Chicago.
Cleveland is 6-0 against Detroit (29-42) this season, having previously secured a four-game sweep at Comerica Park from May 18-21.
