ST. LOUIS -- Mitch Harris has been granted clearance to resume his throwing program after having his right elbow examined by Dr. George Paletta on Monday.
Harris opened the season on the disabled list after feeling discomfort around his elbow midway through Spring Training. The Cardinals hoped that a few weeks of rest would alleviate the issue, though once he began throwing again in April, Harris complained of trouble finishing his pitches. That prompted the Cardinals to fly Harris to St. Louis this week to receive a second opinion on his arm.
General manager John Mozeliak said the organization will now revise Harris' throwing program to begin the process of slowly building back his arm strength. The Cardinals expect to have a better feel for when Harris might begin a Minor League rehab assignment in about 10 days.
An MRI taken of Harris' elbow revealed no structural concerns.
Harris, a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, made his Major League debut with the Cardinals last season. He posted a 3.67 ERA over 26 appearances.
