Report: Top '21 pick Davis promoted to Double-A

May 8th, 2022

The first overall pick in last year's MLB Draft just earned a promotion, according to a report by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

, the Pirates' No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline and No. 23 overall, is reportedly headed to Double-A Altoona after hitting .341 with a 1.035 OPS and five home runs in 22 games at High-A Greensboro this season.

The Pirates selected Davis with the first overall pick out of the University of Louisville, where he hit .370/.483/.663 with 15 homers in 50 games in 2021. In his first taste of pro ball, he hit .308 with three homers in eight games between Rookie level and High-A before an oblique injury cut his first season short.

Standing at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Davis' ceiling is very high offensively, and the 22-year-old catcher has a very strong arm behind the plate, where he continues to improve in other aspects.

Davis will now try to keep moving quickly through the Pirates' farm system, and if he continues to hit the way he's been hitting, he could find himself at PNC Park ahead of schedule.
