MIAMI -- The Marlins walked it off against the Mets on Sunday with a grand slam from Heriberto Hernández.
Hernández hammered an 0-1 pitch from Devin Williams deep to center field to break the scoreless tie, powering the Marlins to a 4-0 win and their first three-game sweep of the Mets since 2019 at loanDepot park. This is Miami's first three-game win streak since starting the season with a sweep of the Rockies.
For Hernández, it was his second home run of the season (May 16 against the Rays). It was MLB's first walk-off grand slam in a 0-0 game since Kansas City's Justin Maxwell on Sept. 22, 2013.
The Marlins had Tyler Phillips start his first game of the season in a bullpen game. He gave Miami 3 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Calvin Faucher, John King, Anthony Bender, Michael Petersen and Pete Fairbanks combined to pitch the following 5 1/3 scoreless, as they allowed a combined three hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Phillips made his last Major League start on Sept. 7, 2025 against the Phillies and tossed 2 2/3 innings while allowing one earned run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
Since then, Phillips has entered games whenever his manager signaled the bullpen. Entering Sunday, Phillips had completed at least three innings in four of his 15 appearances while carrying a 1.20 ERA.
“In recent weeks, he's been throwing the ball terrifically,” McCullough said before the game. “His arsenal is much deeper, it's better than it was in the past with how the split's come along and the velocity he's been showing, so I think he has the pitch mix to go and do this.”
