Goodman headed back to All-Star Game for 2nd straight year

DENVER -- has spent the season placing his name alongside those of the greats in Rockies history and some of the sport’s most revered catchers. On Saturday evening, his name was called as a National League All-Star for the second straight year, being selected as a reserve behind starter Drake Baldwin of the Braves.

Going into Saturday night’s home game against the Giants, Goodman’s home run rate -- one every 11.59 at-bats -- is second in the Majors only to the Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber (10.53).

Goodman’s 27 homers are tied with Hall of Famer Larry Walker (2001) for most ever by a Rockie through the team’s first 89 games in a season. Goodman is also tied for third in homers among primary catchers -- with Mike Piazza (2000), behind Cal Raleigh (35 in 2025) and Johnny Bench (28 in 1970) -- in such a stretch.

While a home run anywhere is a good play, the fact Goodman has 18 of his homers on the road eliminates the criticism that has beset many Rockies stars past -- that playing in Colorado’s altitude somehow discounts their accomplishments. Goodman’s road homer total is tied for ninth most over a season in club history.

The home runs beg the question: Does Goodman get his shot in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby? The field had not been announced as of Saturday, but he has been practicing at Coors Field -- with his father, Robert Goodman, pitching to him.

Saturday’s announcement comes with a feeling of “what might have been.” While it’s difficult to justify multiple All-Stars from a club that has been at the bottom of the NL West and NL standings throughout the season, the individual seasons of Goodman and three others are signs of an improving club.

Outfielder/designated hitter Mickey Moniak had a 1.051 OPS and 12 home runs in his first 35 games before right ankle tendinitis slowed his numbers and forced him to the injured list. Only this week has Moniak regained his swing. First baseman TJ Rumfield floated under the radar until being chosen NL Rookie of the Month for May and June. Outfielder Jake McCarthy started slowly. But since permanently climbing above .200 on April 22, he has batted safely above .300 -- including a .326/.361/.554 slash line over 22 games in June.

Something to know: Until Elias Díaz was chosen -- and earned All-Star Game MVP honors in 2023 -- a Rockies catcher had never been invited. Now, with Goodman’s consecutive honors, it’s three times in four years.
