GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene was diagnosed with bone chips and loose bodies in his right elbow, president of baseball operations Nick Krall said on Tuesday.
Greene is scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday. His timeline to return to a big league mound is 14-16 weeks, which would bring him back active on the Reds sometime in July.
A 2024 All-Star, Greene will have his surgery performed in Los Angeles by surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache. It was ElAttrache's second opinion that confirmed an original diagnosis by team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tim Kremchek on Friday.
Greene underwent an MRI last Friday after he reported stiffness in the elbow following his Spring Training debut on Feb. 28.
“We need to get this,” manager Terry Francona said last week. “You know, you're asking the guy to go out there and throw as hard as he can. We need to make sure he's OK.”
