Greene throws 1st bullpen session since right elbow surgery

NEW YORK -- In a small but important step in his rehabilitation back from right elbow surgery, Reds pitcher threw his first side bullpen session on Tuesday.

Manager Terry Francona estimated that Greene threw between 15-20 pitches at the team complex in Goodyear, Ariz., without complications. The right-hander's timetable still targets him for a return sometime in July.

“That’s his first time, first side today. Other than it’s really kind of cool to see him throw a side, that’s not going to impact or tell very much,” Francona said. “He’s got some work to do.”

Greene and another injured starter, Brandon Williamson (left shoulder fatigue), are scheduled to be in Cincinnati and be around the club during its six-game homestand, which starts Friday against the Braves.

“He and Williamson will be at our homestand and then go back out [to Arizona] when we leave to continue their stuff,” Francona said.

Greene was expected to miss 14-16 weeks after having a March 11 arthroscopic procedure that removed loose bodies from his right elbow.

The 26-year-old Greene was 7-4 with a 2.76 ERA in 2025, but he set career lows with 19 starts, 132 strikeouts and 107 2/3 innings after missing more than two months with a Grade 1 right groin strain.

Cincinnati currently has three starting pitchers on the injured list in Greene, Williamson and Rhett Lowder, who has been out since May 10 with right shoulder pain. Lowder is scheduled to face hitters in simulated game action on Wednesday at Citi Field.
