TORONTO -- Blue Jays vice president of business operations Andrew Miller was walking the infield at Rogers Centre on Monday morning assessing the overnight damage from the inclement weather when a large chunk of ice, which had fallen from the nearby CN Tower, pierced a portion of the roof above right field.
The hole, which measured three feet by five feet, caused the postponement of Monday's series opener against the Royals. The clubs will play a traditional doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3:07 p.m. ET.
"It was really loud. It sounded like fireworks or some sort of explosion going off," Miller said. "I was on the field this morning, first thing this morning with Dave McCormick, our head of engineering, and Tom Farrell, our head of field operations -- they were showing me some of the damage that had already occurred overnight -- and as we were down there, it was probably 9:30 or 10 o'clock in the morning, we heard a number of different loud collisions with the roof, and then we saw one crash through the roof.
"We saw it happen, it was pretty frightening at the time. We knew that should there have been a game going on at the time, there would've been a risk to players and fans."
With Monday's postponement the Blue Jays have now played just once in the past five days. The team had a scheduled off-day on Thursday before opening a three-game series in Cleveland on Friday. However, weather postponed games on Saturday and Sunday.

Miller admitted the recent postponements had the staff working diligently to ensure Monday's game would be played. However, the announcement to postpone it came at 5:35 p.m. local time.
"We were looking at doing everything we could possibly do to get the game in, obviously with the last two games getting rained out in Cleveland. Our goal was to try and get a game in tonight," Miller said. "We took as much time to assess the information we could, look at the information on the roof, the weather and ultimately decided to postpone it."
The Rogers Centre staff patched several holes throughout the afternoon and continued to work on patching minor leaks in an effort to have Tuesday's doubleheader start on time.
Anyone who had tickets for Tuesday's game will get access to both games of the doubleheader. People who had tickets for Monday's game can exchange them through the Blue Jays ticket office for Tuesday or a number of other games.
