NEW YORK -- A couple of hits in Monday's 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Mets moved Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki up MLB's all-time hits list. Ichiro had a single and double at Citi Field, giving him 3,011 in his career to pass Wade Boggs for 27th place all time.
After matching Boggs at 3,010 with a single in the fourth inning, Ichiro doubled to right-center off reliever Addison Reed with two outs in the eighth. He would come around to score the game's first run on Xavier Scruggs' RBI double.
"Those were two big hits right there at a good time in the game, and we're in a good spot with our guys," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said.
Miami's lead didn't last long, as the Mets tied it on A.J. Ramos' wild pitch that scored José Reyes in the bottom of the eighth. New York eventually won it on Yoenis Céspedes' walk-off homer in the 10th inning off Nick Wittgren.
The Marlins' offense has been struggling the past few weeks, but Ichiro got it going early in the game.
In the fourth inning, the Marlins were hitless against right-hander Rafael Montero before Ichiro's two-out, opposite-field single.
It's been a year of milestones for Ichiro, who entered 2016 just 65 hits shy of 3,000. The veteran became the 30th player in MLB history to reach the benchmark on Aug. 7 with a triple at Colorado.
Next on the all-time list is Rafael Palmeiro, who is 26th with 3,020.
Ichiro had been in a 1-for-18 slump before he reached in the fourth. He is getting more playing time in right field with Giancarlo Stanton on the disabled list with a Grade 3 left groin strain, as Mattingly has been going with Ichiro against right-handed starters and recently acquired Jeff Francoeur against lefties.
