MILWAUKEE -- The fourth-inning single by Ildemaro Vargas led to the Diamondbacks' first and only run of the game in Thursday's 13-1 loss to the Brewers, and it kept Vargas' hitting streak alive.
The Diamondbacks infielder has opened the season by hitting in 23 straight games, and 26 dating back to last year. The single off Shane Drohan snuck through the infield between the shortstop and third baseman, advancing Corbin Carroll to third after a double -- and Carroll scored on Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s subsequent single.
The 23 straight is tied for the second longest streak to open a season since 1940. Edgar Renteria (Braves) hit safely in the first 23 games of 2006, while Ron LeFlore (Tigers) is the leader thanks to his 30-game streak to open the 1976 season. Joe Torre, then with the Cardinals, hit in 22 straight to open the 1971 season.
The 26-game streak dating back to last season is the longest active streak in MLB, and it's the longest since Bryan Reynolds hit in 25 straight for the Pirates in 2024.
Among Diamondbacks single-season hit streaks, the 23 games ranks third behind Luis Gonzalez (30 in 1999) and Tony Womack (24 in 2000).
Including hit streaks that span multiple seasons, Vargas’ 26-game streak ties him for second with Paul Goldschmidt, who hit in 26 straight from the end of the 2013 season into the first week of the 2014 season, behind Gonzalez.
