SEATTLE -- Indians catcher Yan Gomes exited Tuesday night's 7-1 loss to the Mariners at Safeco Field with a testicular contusion after being hit with a foul tip by Mariners first baseman Dae-Ho Lee in the second inning.
The foul tip came on the fifth pitch of a 10-pitch at-bat that ended with Lee striking out against Indians right-hander Cody Anderson. Gomes doubled over in pain and collected himself in a crouch for several minutes while being attended to by a team trainer. He was replaced behind the plate by Chris Gimenez.
It was the second delay of the inning for the Indians. In the top of the frame, left fielder Jose Ramirez fouled a ball off the top of his left foot and appeared to be in pain before deciding to finish the at-bat -- he grounded out off Seattle starter Wade Miley on the next pitch -- and staying in the game in left field.
Gomes was taken to a local hospital for an ultrasound, according to Indians manager Terry Francona, and the team was awaiting the results.
"I don't think he's probably having the best night of his life," Francona said.
