CHICAGO -- Barring a last-second setback, Indians catcher will be activated on Friday and probably will be in the lineup for that night's game with the Detroit Tigers at Progressive Field.
Gomes, who has been out since July 17 with a separated right shoulder, caught all nine innings of a rehab game with Double-A Akron on Tuesday. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
"He's gonna DH [Wednesday], he'll be down [Thursday] and then all things are pointing to him catching for us on Friday," manager Terry Francona said Wednesday before the game with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
"He's excited about that. We'll let him get through the game tonight, but everything is pointing in that direction."
Francona said reports are that Gomes is throwing well, which is a natural concern for a player returning from a shoulder injury.
"We're not gonna play him every day right off," Francona said. "He doesn't have to worry about bouncing back that second day. We'll keep an eye on him."
In 71 games this season (249 at-bats), Gomes is batting .165 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs.
