CLEVELAND -- The Indians added an arm to their bullpen prior to Tuesday's game against the White Sox, promoting lefty Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A Columbus.
In order to clear a spot on the active roster for Beliveau, the Indians optioned starter Adam Plutko to Columbus. The move gives Cleveland some relief help in the wake of Sunday's 14-inning win over the Astros.
With Shane Bieber scheduled to be called up from Columbus on Thursday to make his Major League debut in a spot start against the Twins, and off-days looming Monday and next Thursday, the Indians will not need a fifth starter again until June 12 against the White Sox. In the meantime, Plutko can start on schedule with the Clippers before potentially returning to Cleveland's rotation.
Manager Terry Francona said he debated moving Plutko to the bullpen to make room for Bieber, but he was adamant there was more value in keeping Plutko on a regular schedule.
"We just felt that he's done such a good job this year," Francona said. "And to take him out of his routines and stuff might not help him as much as we need.
"This was not a demotion because he walked a couple guys. And he understands that."
Plutko, who logged five innings in Monday's 9-5 win over the White Sox, has gone 3-0 with a 3.93 ERA for the Indians. Beliveau had a 10.80 ERA in five appearances out of Cleveland's bullpen earlier this season.
Worth noting
• The Indians acquired right-hander Myles Jaye from the Twins for cash considerations on Tuesday. Jaye will join Columbus.
Jaye was 3-3 with a 4.25 ERA through 41 1/3 innings for Triple-A Rochester. The Fayetteville, Ga., native started eight games for the Red Wings.
• Right hander Danny Salazar arrived in Cleveland on Monday night and joined the team for the first time since Spring Training on Tuesday prior a visit with Dr. Mark Schickendantz, the team's head physician. Salazar, who has been on the 60-day disabled list since March, is battling right shoulder impingement.
"I'm trying to stay positive and go about it the best way I can," Salazar said. "You have to fight it out. But when I see that I can throw but it's bothering me or I feel something pinching, that kind of gets me down. But the next day, I come back with the same energy, trying to feel positive again."
• Relief ace Andrew Miller was in New York on Tuesday afternoon to see Dr. David Altchek, and he's awaiting results of a checkup. Miller was placed on the 10-day DL on Saturday with right knee inflammation. It is Miller's second DL stint this season.
• Brandon Guyer will continue his Minor League rehab assignment with Columbus, rather than Double-A Akron, where he began his assignment. Guyer, who's been sidelined since May 20 with a left cervical strain, went 0-for-4 Monday in Akron's 5-3 loss to Richmond.
Francona said Guyer will play again on Tuesday and Wednesday before taking Thursday off. The outfielder will resume his stint through the weekend before being evaluated again.
• Francona also said outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall was back at Progressive Field on Monday and was working with the team Tuesday afternoon, and outfielder Bradley Zimmer was also given the day off. Both have been assigned to Akron to complete rehab assignments. Chisenhall (right calf strain) went 1-for-4, while Zimmer (left rib contusion) walked twice and scored a run.
• Twenty-one former Major League All-Stars are among baseball dignitaries scheduled to represent the 30 clubs at the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft on Monday. Notable stars like Andre Dawson, Rollie Fingers, Tommy Lasorda, Bo Jackson and Kirk Gibson will be in attendance, among others. Former Cleveland infielder John McDonald will represent the Indians.
