CLEVELAND -- Cold weather and increasing levels of precipitation pushed Opening Day back by a day for the Indians.
Roughly two hours prior to Monday's scheduled first pitch between the Red Sox and Indians at Progressive Field, Cleveland announced that the game had been postponed until 1:10 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Tribe ace Corey Kluber is still scheduled to square off against Red Sox lefty David Price in the season opener for both clubs.
The Indians noted that both teams, in conjunction with the umpires, made the decision as a group based on the forecast for Monday afternoon and evening. While Tuesday is also expected to feature colder weather, the precipitation is not expected to create the same kind of inclement conditions that Monday presented.
"Today's game was postponed due to the forecast changing from no precipitation to having precipitation most of the afternoon and into early evening," the Indians said in a statement. "[Due to] that steady precipitation forecast combined with wind chills dropping into the teens, it was decided by both teams and umpires for fan comfort and player safety to postpone the game. Tomorrow's forecast will continue to be cold, but no anticipated precipitation."

In the hours leading up to the decision, snow flurries came and went over Progressive Field and temperatures hovered below freezing. At the time of the postponement, the temperature was 31 degrees, but with the wind chill, it felt like 18 degrees.
The situation was reminiscent of 2007, when the Indians had their home opener postponed due to heavy snow.
Fans able to attend Tuesday's makeup game will still see Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney throw out the ceremonial first pitch and have William Clarence Marshall sing the national anthem. Sandy Alomar Jr. will be honored before the game as well as part of the team's "Only Here" campaign. The gates will open at 11 a.m.
The Indians are offering a ticket-exchange program for fans both able or unable to attend Tuesday's season opener.
"We know how special Opening Day is for our fans, and recognize how unfortunate the challenging weather scenario was for them," Indians owner Paul Dolan said in a news release. "We value each and every one of our fans, and we want to make this unique and difficult situation right by extending this offer."
Fans who can attend Tuesday's game will be entitled to another game of their choice in April or May. For those unable to attend Tuesday's tilt, the Indians will offer two other games of their choice in April or May. The opportunity to exchange for alternate games will begin on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
