Ross needs more time on disabled list

April 20th, 2016

SAN DIEGO -- Padres pitcher Tyson Ross was back on the field Tuesday night, just not on the mound, as he continues to recover from a right shoulder injury.
Ross, the Padres' Opening Day starter, played catch for the first time since being placed on the disabled list on April 4. He played catch for five minutes from about 70 feet under the watchful eye of the Padres' medical staff.
What's clear is Ross, who complained of tightness in the shoulder, isn't exiting the DL on Wednesday when he's eligible to do so.
"Obviously, it's the first day he is going to throw, so he is not coming off the DL tomorrow. That doesn't make sense,'' manager Andy Green said.
The Padres originally thought Ross (0-1) would be ready to come back this week, but they slowed his rehabilitation about 10 days ago when he felt discomfort.
Ross surrendered nine hits and eight runs (seven earned) in a loss to the Dodgers in the opener, his lone start of the season.
Other injury news
• Switch-hitting third baseman Yangervis Solarte took batting practice, left-handed, for the first time since straining his right hamstring. Solarte, who landed on the DL on April 10, has yet to resume running.
• Right-handed pitcher Brandon Morrow, who threw a side session on Tuesday after starting on Sunday in Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore, will go to Double-A El Paso as he rebounds from offseason shoulder surgery. Green said Morrow will have one, maybe two starts at El Paso before the Padres consider their next move.
