HOUSTON -- Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez missed his final at-bat in Sunday night's 9-3 win over the Astros due to back spasms.
But don't look for the invaluable DH/outfielder to join Mookie Betts and Dustin Pedroia among the team's All-Star cast of injured players.
Manager Alex Cora expects that Martinez will be back in the lineup when the Red Sox resume action on Tuesday night at Fenway Park against the Tigers.
In fact, Cora had to talk Martinez into giving up his final at-bat on Sunday, in which Sam Travis stepped up as a pinch-hitter against Astros closer Ken Giles and came through with a two-run single.
It was the first at-bat of the season for Travis, who was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday.
"I told [Martinez], 'Hey, man, we're up 4, we've got the best closer in the game, if we can't shut it down up four without you, we don't deserve to win the game.' And, Sam, he put a good at-bat," said Cora. "That was good to see. That's a good pitcher over there, fastball/slider, and for him to stay through that pitch was good to see."
Cora thinks the spasms are probably related to the grueling schedule of late for the Red Sox, who played 26 games in 27 days prior to the welcomed day off the team will enjoy on Monday.
"Traveling," said Cora. "A lot of people complain, honestly, about the travel, and that's why we stayed off the field [for batting practice the last two days]. I think the workload the past few days, day games at home last week, and flying all the way here, that's probably why."
Martinez is having a tremendous first season with the Red Sox, slashing .315/.374/.648 with 19 homers and 50 RBIs.
"He'll be fine," Cora said of Martinez.
