Martinez's DP wins Play of the Week

July 6th, 2021

Defensive accolades are a rarity for Red Sox slugger , who spends most of his time as a designated hitter. But Martinez’s double play in the 10th inning of Boston’s 7-6 loss against the A’s on Saturday has earned the 33-year-old the Play of the Week Award.

With one out, the bases loaded and the score tied at 4 in the bottom of the 10th at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday, A's shortstop Elvis Andrus lined a ball to left field. Reacting quickly, Martinez raced in to make the waist-high grab for the second out. The play had a 40% Catch Probability, making it a four-star catch.

As A’s catcher Sean Murphy tagged up from third base, Martinez came up throwing and easily nailed Murphy at the plate to end the inning. It was the third outfield assist of the season for Martinez, who has made only 16 appearances in the field.
