All-MLB: Jake 1st Team, Conforto 2nd Team

December 10th, 2020

NEW YORK -- may not have won a third consecutive National League Cy Young Award in 2020, but he nonetheless took home plenty of accolades following another strong season. For the second straight year, deGrom was named to Major League Baseball’s All-MLB First Team along with four other starting pitchers.

Another Met, , was named to the All-MLB Second Team, which the league announced on Wednesday night.

In a short season marred by multiple minor injuries, deGrom still managed a 2.38 ERA with an NL-leading 104 strikeouts. His strikeout rate of 13.8 per nine innings was also tops in the NL, but the small sample size of the 60-game slate hurt a pitcher accustomed to pulling away from the Cy Young pack in September.

Still, deGrom made his second consecutive All-MLB First Team, this time alongside NL Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer, a free agent, as well as Cleveland’s Shane Bieber, the Cubs' Yu Darvish and Atlanta’s Max Fried.

The Mets had only one other finalist for the All-MLB First Team: Conforto, who lost out to Mookie Betts of the Dodgers, Mike Trout of the Angels and Juan Soto of the Nationals. Conforto did make the All-MLB Second Team, however, in recognition of a season that saw him hit .322/.412/.515 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs, setting career highs in batting average and on-base percentage.

The All-MLB Teams were established last year to recognize the top performances by players at every position around the diamond. As in 2019, MLB split the winners into a First and Second Team, each with one catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop and designated hitter, plus three outfielders, five starting pitchers and two relievers.

The selection process began in early November, with half of the vote coming from fans and the other 50% from a panel of experts. Fans were able to cast ballots once every 24 hours until Nov. 13.
