Twins recall Cave, Smeltzer among roster moves

Wade Jr. put on IL, Stewart optioned to Minor Leagues

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Twins made two more moves to fill out their depleted roster for the final game of the first half on Sunday by recalling left-hander Devin Smeltzer and outfielder from Triple-A Rochester. Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list with a dislocated right thumb and was optioned back down to Triple-A.

Smeltzer is expected to contribute an extended relief outing behind right-hander Kyle Gibson, who will make an abbreviated start as an opener of sorts in Sunday's contest against the Rangers. The 23-year-old left-hander allowed five earned runs in 12 1/3 innings (a 3.65 ERA) over his first two Major League starts earlier this season.

The Twins had to recall Smeltzer as part of a makeshift pitching plan against the Rangers because Jake Odorizzi, who would have lined up to pitch Sunday, was placed on the IL with a right middle finger blister following his last start.

Meanwhile, Cave was recalled after Wade dislocated his thumb on an attempt at a leaping catch at the left-center field wall in Saturday's game. Wade's injury compounds an already severe shortage of outfield depth for the Twins, who already have Eddie Rosario and Willians Astudillo on the IL and Marwin Gonzalez playing despite being dinged up.

"Almost every guy in that clubhouse has given up his body for this team," manager Rocco Baldelli said. "It's been challenging. There are days where everyone out there knows that it's been difficult to field nine guys that can take the field. Because of that and the way that we've been able to continue to play and persevere and go through this stretch, I think our guys should be extremely proud of themselves and very happy with the way this has gone."
